Hungarian Presbyterian Church - 1902-2025 {Closed}
745 Mahoning Ave, Yo., OH 44502
Founded in 1902 by Hungarian immigrants—who preferred to be known as Magyars—and located at 745 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown.
Early support came from the First Presbyterian and Westminster churches, which transferred their chapel to the Hungarian congregation on land owned by Thomas Wells, who also assisted in construction of the permanent church.
Designed in a Castellated Neo-Gothic architectural style, the church emphasizes strength and permanence through a massive octagonal tower, battlement detailing at the tower base, and a mix of square-headed and arched windows.
A pipe organ costing $6,000 was installed in the mid-1920s and remains a defining feature of the sanctuary.
Interior signage and scripture are written entirely in Hungarian, including a large bilingual display of the Ten Commandments, reinforcing cultural and linguistic identity.
Beginning in 1956, the church became actively involved in refugee resettlement, assisting European families seeking religious and political freedom, and later Vietnamese refugees.
This humanitarian mission continued through 2010.
Once serving nearly 800 congregants, membership steadily declined. By 2025, the church had 51 registered members, with fewer than 20 attending weekly services.
In July 2025, the congregation voted to close due to rising maintenance costs.
The final worship service was held on August 3, 2025.
The church is currently listed for sale for $165,000.
