Founded by Slovak immigrants who settled in Youngstown’s Steelton neighborhood before World War I, located at 613 N. Lakeview Ave.
Land for the church was purchased from Carnegie Steel for the sum of $2,000 through house-to-house collections from local families.
Constructed in a blend of Modernized Romanesque and refined Gothic elements, the church features rounded arches, a brick exterior with limestone accents, and thoughtful Gothic-style modifications, creating a unique, integrated design.
In 1927 a new 42- classroom school was opened for the parish children under the auspices of the Ursuline nuns. Due to a declining population the high school closed in 1989 and the Elementary School School Closed in 2006.
Holy Name merged in 2012 with Saint Matthias and Saints Cyril and Methodius Church to form Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, initially closing its doors.
In September 2025, the church was purchased by Shepherd of All Gods Children for $45,000 and is currently undergoing renovation, with plans to reopen in 2026.
